When I received this month's issue of Bon Appetit, I fell in love with everything about the cake on the cover. What's not to love about FOUR layers of peppermint and chocolate? And why couldn't I make something like that? Well, this cake is
very tall and
very high maintenance. It took about four hours to make over the span of two days. Here is what it is supposed to look like:

I knew about the time I was adding the third layer and it began sliding off, I had a problem. Colin and I stood there laughing because I had poured so much time and effort into this and it wouldn't even stay together! I made some hasty notes on the recipe for next time (including using dowels to insert in the center and continue whipping the cream to make it more firm). Overall, though, it was pretty delicious, just an eyesore. Oh, did I mention I brought it to a family baby shower Sarah threw for me and the first guest to arrive looked at it and asked "What happened?" Ouch.

okay don't feel bad the same thing happend to me last week with a banana sour cream cake, i ended up throwing the whole thing away. I was upset for 2 days about it
I don't know about anyone else, but that cake looks absolutely delicious!! I wish I could have a bite =)
You know what though? That cake was like gold. So delicious! Who cares what it looked like? ;)
